Richard Hunter-Martin was born prematurely to David Martin and Susan Hunter in January 1967. He was named Richard after her father, but was called Dickie. Susan and David had originally planned to give the baby up for adoption because they were no longer a couple, but Susan decided against it and told David they needed to stay together for the boy.

Dickie died in the summer of 1967 in a tragic accident. His father took him to the park and put him in a swing, not realizing that it was meant for a much bigger child. The child fell from the swing and hit his head. He remained unconscious in the hospital for more than a week and then died.
