Mercer was the second actor to play
Charlie Jannings. He took over the role from Tommy House. Charlie was
only in Salem for about a year after his birth. He left town with his
mother, Ivy, in late 1986.

Marlena {Deidre Hall} got a
chance to hold Charlie when Ivy {Holly Gagnier} brought him
to the hospital to be checked out at the children's clinic.
She said he was getting so big.

Ivy said Charlie was eating
her out of house and home. She said he was the size of a
giant.

Marlena said to Charlie, "So
you're not a finicky eater, huh?"

Ivy said she thought he'd be a
linebacker. Marlena thought he might be.

Ivy said she meant he would be
by first grade. Marlena said, "Oh no, a first grade
linebacker!"

Mercer looked over Dee's
shoulder right into the camera as she talked with Holly.

John came in and Marlena said
she had to leave. John figured it was something he'd said.
Ivy said she thought Marlena liked him.

This is from the 4th of July
celebration in Salem in 1986. Charlie cried almost the
entire time we saw him.

This may have been the only
scene with both of the Barrows siblings. Noelle {Samantha}
saw Charlie crying and tried to comfort him by giving him
her balloon.

Samantha held out her balloon
for Mercer, but when that didn't work, she started to hold
out her arms to him. It was adorable seeing Mercer's big
sister take care of him like this.

These days, Mercer, like many
California guys, is a surfer. He submitted a pic of him
riding a wave to the website Surf
Stickers. Here he is
surfing at Old Man's Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Not only does
Mercer surf, but he is also an avid soccer
player.
