Jack sat Abby down on the couch and said he had something to tell her. He said it was "kind of complicated." Abby was very focused on Jack. {10/18/96}

Jennifer came home as Jack and Abby talked. He decided that they needed to go somewhere else to talk. Abby was already cuddling up to Jack, which would only make things harder. {10/18/96}

Abby {Ryanne} ran into Salem Place, pulling Jack behind her. She was very excited. She had no idea what was coming. {10/18/96}

Jack took Abby to Salem Place so he could tell her he was going to go away. He asked her if she remembered when Santa was in Salem Place last year and he took her there. Abby then asked "Will you bring me again this year Daddy?" {10/18/96}

Jack started to explain that with changes in life, he wouldn't be able to take Abby this year. Abby got real sad and Jack decided it was too public of a place to tell Abby he was going away. So he took her home to finish explaining. {10/18/96}

Jack started by telling Abby that he had gotten a job offer in China. He asked if she knew where China was. Abby answered, "Far away." {10/18/96}

Jack explained to Abby that he was going away and he didn't know when he would return. Abby told him in a very sad voice, "I don't want you to go away." {10/18/96}

Jack explained it as best as he could, and told Abby that she had to take good care of her mom while he was gone. Abby said "OK, I will daddy." She still didn't understand why he had to leave. Jack then promised, not knowing if he would ever be back, that he would return for Abby and Jennifer. {10/18/96}

Then Abby asked Jack "Who will take me to see Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny if you go away? Who will be my daddy if you are not here?" Jack was heart broken. He wasn't too sure what to tell her. {10/18/96}

Jack told Abby he would still be her daddy. Abby didn't understand. She said, "Not if you go away." Jack told her he wouldn't be gone forever. Abby couldn't take it anymore. She ran upstairs crying. {10/18/96}

Abby sat on a step and talked with her mom. Jennifer was feeling a little down. Jennifer was having a hard time with her break-up with Peter. Abby was worried about her mom.
