This was Bumper's first scene in the Night Court episode, "Harry and Leon" in the fall of 1986. Mac {Charles Robinson} and Harry {Harry Anderson} pulled him out from under Harry's bench. Mac said, "This boy is out." |
Harry asked if there was any particular reason Leon was sleeping under his bench. Leon replied, "Is there any particular reason you're sitting on my bed?" Leon was the shoeshine boy in the building and was hiding from something. |
Leon told them he'd gotten in a fight with his parents. Dan {John Laroquette} came back with one of his typical snide remarks. He asked Leon if he'd found out they were really coyotes. Leon gave him a look that could kill. |
Of course Leon gave it right back to him. He said, "Real funny, sludge face." |
Leon gave Dan his magazine back. It was something Leon shouldn't have been looking at. Dan grabbed Leon and told him he'd get him if he'd torn out any of the pictures. |
Christine {Markie Post} said she'd take Leon into Harry's office. Leon said they could play five card draw...jacks or better to open. Christine replied, "Jacks? I love that game." |
Christine went on to say that it "gets tough when I get past twosies." Leon gave the rest of the courtroom quite a look. He had no clue what she was talking about. |
Christine held out her cards and said to Leon, "you win, don't you?" Leon said, "Yes, now you have to take off his dress." Christine wondered why he didn't play with chips. Leon replied, "I know what chips look like." |
Harry came in and asked about the fight with his parents. Leon said it was "a doozy." He said, "How come my dad never treats me like Mr. Cleaver did the Beaver?" |
Harry asked Leon for his parents' phone number so he could give them a call. Leon answered in a cartoon voice, "No can do." Harry said he figured that was the case. He told Leon that he knew what was going on. Leon was stunned, saying, "You do?" |
Christine tried to teach Leon a bit about her job. In the middle of her explanation he said, "You smell wonderful." She was going to give up trying to be nice to Leon. He was like a miniature Dan. |
Art, the maintenance man came downstairs and said there was an antenna on the roof. Harry knew what was up. He and Art followed it and found Leon makeshift home near the roof. Leon was watching TV when Harry arrived. |
Leon told Harry he had "everything a man could ask for: a color TV, a Video Cassette Recorder and a coffeemaker." He told Harry to make himself at home. |
Harry told Leon that he'd seen his case file and knew he had run away from lots of foster homes. Leon asked Harry, "Do you think any of them really cared about me?" |
Leon was annoyed with Harry. Leon said to Harry, "Do you see me coming into your home and asking you personal questions?" Harry reminded him that a home had doors and windows and a family, that this wasn't a home. |
Leon didn't think any of his foster parents had really cared about him. "No one wants me. If they did, they'd keep me." Leon told Harry that so many times he'd come home from school to find his suitcase packed by the front door. |
Harry told Leon that foster homes are temporary. Leon didn't believe that. He said "it's been 12 years" in and out of foster homes. |
Leon asked, "How come no one's come to claim this little bundle of joy yet?" Harry didn't have an answer. He sadly said, "I don't know." |
Leon said Harry didn't get it. For him it was the "end of the line." Leon told him, "I'm 12...that's middle age in the adoption game." Leon went on to tell Harry that everyone wants babies. No one wants a kid like him. |
Leon took a baseball bat and smashed the TV. He told Harry, "Now the Beaver's gotta move too." |
Leon appeared back in Harry's office where the social worker was waiting. He said, "Call off the bloodhounds. I'm here. Lady, if you're hear from the state, I'm ready to roll." |
On their way out, Christine stopped them and asked, "what's going to happen to him." The social worker said he'd be going to a group shelter until they could find him adoptive parents. Leon knew what that meant. He said, "meaning I'm there 'til I'm dead." |
The social worker said that wasn't going to happen. Leon knew not to get his hopes up. He said, "Oh yeah, there's an off chance for Peter Pan to fly in carry me away to Never Land." |
Harry appeared at the door and said, "Or I will." The social worker looked at him in shock and said, "Say what?" Harry asked, "Can I keep him...in my home?" Leon was shocked too, saying, "You want me?" |
Harry replied, "Yeah...I do." |
The social worker reminded Harry that it could be quite some time before an adoptive family was found for Leon. Leon turned and said, "Hey, thanks for bringing that up." |
Harry said he'd have Leon as long as it takes. He'd "love him while he was there, and miss him when he's gone." Harry said he'd always wanted a son, but most of all, he'd always wanted a Video Cassette Recorder. Leon looked at him with loving eyes. |
Harry asked if Leon would be with him. He held out his arms and Leon ran into them for a hug. |
Looking on, Bull said Harry was so happy that he didn't even notice the snot. Leon backed away from Harry and told him he thought he'd ruined his shirt. Harry said it was OK. |
The social worker said it was a strange request, but since Harry was a judge, she was sure they could arrange something. Leon ran up to Christine and said, "All right!" He held up his hand for a high five. Christine didn't understand. She just held up her hand too and said, "Congratulations." |
Everyone congratulated Harry as Leon looked on. |
Leon was beaming. He said, "Thanks Harry, thanks a lot!" |
Harry told Leon they needed to make a deal. There wouldn't be any more running away. Leon agreed and they shook on it. |
