The Soap Opera Update Awards were originally given on daytime talk shows, including Regis and Kathie Lee and Maury Povich. They eventually were part of their own primetime special shown on Lifetime in 1997. The awards have not aired since 1997.

The SOU awards are unique because they pick the best actor, actress and couple from each daytime show. Then there are "Best of the Best" awards that go to the best actor, actress and couple overall.
