Jordan Michael Vance
Madeline Flora Grey
1997-98

Jordan Michael Vance was cast in the role of Maddie after the casting director took one look at him. AMC was looking for a baby with dark hair and dark eyes, just like onscreen mother Maria. Jordan first aired on AMC when he was six weeks old and he played the role until he was about one. The role was recast since he was looking more like a boy. Everyone on the set loved working with Jordan. He always smiled, no matter how tired he was. {Info and photo on left from SOW, photo on right from SOD}

Jordan appeared on the cover of Soap Opera Digest twice within the year he was on the show. That is definitely rare for a soap infant. He was part of a key storyline. Maddie was born when Maria delivered prematurely with Erica's help. Erica told Maria the baby had died. Soon Erica went overseas and came back with a baby she'd adopted, and named Sonya. That baby was actually Maddie. {Photos by Robert Milazzo, SOD 8/12/97 and SOD 6/24/97 }

Since Jordan was only a single child playing the role of Maddie at such a young age, his time on the set was very limited, sometimes backup babies were needed. John Callahan {Edmund} said, "Jordan's the best baby in the whole world. I love that kid.'" When Jordan would see John on the set, he'd hold out his arms and say "dada" then give him a big hug. He also knew how to spot his onscreen dad on TV while watching at home. Callahan knew eventually the role would be recast. He commented, "He has beaten all attempts to recast. You just put him in pink and let him go. I think the audience doesn't care. The relationship and how good he acts is more important." He later noted, "He's definitely a boy, and they can only put him in dresses for so long, because he's starting to look like a linebacker. " {Info from SOW}

The Hubbards were one of the first intact African American families on daytime. Jesse (Darnell Williams) and Angie (Debbie Morgan) were an incredibly popular couple and having a child didn't diminish their appeal.
