Benjamin played Mikey during the second main storyline that the character had in Bay City. In 1988, Donna and Michael adopted orphaned Mikey. In 1990, his birth parents, Eve and Toby Miller, resurfaced and tried to reclaim him. Mikey Miller was hit by Sam Fowler during his cab driving days. Mikey was taken to the hospital, where Michael soon met him and fell in love. Alex was a member of Broadway Kids and sang on the album "Back on Broadway" with Eden Riegel (now Bianca on AMC), Michael Shulman (Timmy on AMC) and Greg Raposo (Dream Street with Jesse McCartney). He appeared on that album as a result of his work on Broadway (as well as some touring casts) in Les Miserables, Cabaret (1998-99), The King and I (as Louis), and The Sound of Music (as Kurt). He also appeared in national tours of productions opposite Marie Osmond, Haley Mills and Richard Chamberland. Other theatre credits include, The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, the first National Tour of Beauty and the Beast and the world premiere of the Andrew Lloyd Webber / Hal Prince production of Whistle Down the Wind. He created the role of Peppy in Tina Landau and Ricky Ian Gordon's Off-Broadway production of Dream True.
