Mary Beth Whitehead was hired by Bill and Betsy Stern to be their surrogate. After giving birth, Mary Beth found it impossible to give the baby up. She named the baby Sarah, while the Sterns named her Melissa. The battle over the little girl made national news. Mary Beth took the baby home, but it wasn't long before the Sterns sent the police to reclaim the child that they believed to legally be theirs. Erin and Caitlin played the role perfectly, crying on cue as the baby was taken from the only home she had known. {pics courtesy Vera} |

After Julia was in bed, Samantha got up and walked into the living room. She went back over to the couch where the book laid. Eden and Cruz were busy on their magical night, as Mrs. and Mrs. Claus. Eden and Cruz arrived as the house just as Samantha woke up. Eden went and picked up Samantha and said, "I'm Mrs. Claus and that's Santa Claus." They put Samantha back to bed and left many gifts for the little girl. {episode 12/23/88} |

One of the most exciting scenes for Erin and Caitlin seemed to be in 1989 during the Sonny Sprocket storyline. Sonny decided he needed to bond with "his daughter." He went and got Samantha and took her to the beach. He had a baby swing for her. She was much too big for it, but he put her in anyway and Erin and Caitlin laughed the whole time they were in it. Then Sonny sang a song to her, "Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Capwells." {1/3/89 episode} |

The girls always seemed to have so much fun on the set, laughing at any chance they got or making jokes with Nancy Lee Grahn (Julia) or one of the many Masons (they worked with all three). They were never shy about talking onscreen. Erin and Caitlin were the longest running actresses as Samantha. They both played the role during her toddler years. After three years in the role, they started looking less alike, so TPTB decided that only Erin would play her. {pic on left courtesy Vera, 12/10/90} |

Mason had a visit from Samantha. He told her that he was going to marry Cassie soon. Something was funny to Caitlin. She smiled the whole time and laughed so hard that she covered her mouth. This was Caitlin's last appearance as Samantha. She and her sister were now looking quite different, so the show decided it was best to just have one of them in the role. Since the girls were now four, they could work longer, so having two children wasn't as necessary. {pics courtesy Vera, 10/24/91 episode} |

Erin's biggest storyline as Samantha was the story surrounding the Ballymore house. Mason (Gordon Thomson) and Julia moved in there after they remarried in 1992. They were creeped out by the house, but Samantha liked it. She proclaimed, "I like this house and it likes me." It was here Samantha met a "special friend" that it seemed only who should see. She was very animated when she talked about her friend. The girl later turned out to be Aurora. The house also caused Samantha to get sick. Micah DeAngelis (Thaao Penghlis), who had once lived in the house, was able to cure her. {pic on right 3/2/92, pic on left 2/28/92, pics above 3/6/92} |
